With over 15,600 taxis in Madrid, finding a free one on any of the city’s main thoroughfares is rarely difficult.
Taxis in Madrid are white with a diagonal red band on their front door bearing the emblem of the city. They have a green light that is on when they are free. To hail a taxi all you need to do is to raise your hand.
There are also several taxi ranks around the city, indicated by a blue sign with a white letter ‘T’. At railway and bus stations and at the airport taxis must be taken from the corresponding ranks. Throughout the rest of the city they can easily be stopped in the street.
Journeys are usually paid for in cash, though more and more taxis accept credit cards.
The following taxi fares have been in force since 22 December 2010:
Start of journey (setting the taxi meter running): 2.10 € Monday to Saturday from 6 am to 9 pm; 2.20 € from Monday to Friday, from 9 pm to 6 am the following day; 2.20 € on Sundays and public holidays, from 6 am to 9 pm; and 3.10 € on Saturdays and public holidays from 9 pm to 6 am the following day.
Each kilometre covered in Tariff 1 (A area -City of Madrid- Monday to Friday between 6 am and 9 pm and Saturdays from 6 am to 3 pm except public holidays): 1 €
Each kilometre covered in Tariff 2 (A area Monday to Friday between 9 pm and 6 am, Saturdays between 3 pm and 6 am and on public holidays; and B area -surrounding cities- Monday to Friday between 6 am and 9 pm and Saturdays from 6 am to 3 pm except public holidays): 1.17 €
Each kilometre covered in Tariff 3 (B area Monday to Friday from 9 pm to 6 am, Saturdays from 3 pm to 6 am and public holidays): 1.20 €
Each hour of service at a speed below cruise speed or meter speed (less than 18.50 Km/h for Tariff 1, less than 15.81 Km/h for Tariff 2 by day, less than 15.42 Km/h for Tariff 3 by day; less than 17.09 Km/h for Tariff 2 by night, less than 16.67 Km/h for Tariff 3 by night): 18.50 € during the day (6 am to 9 pm) and 20 € at night (9 pm to 6 am).
There are several private companies that can be called to order a taxi. You should bear in mind that in these cases the taxi meter starts running at the point where the taxi driver is when (s)he picks up the call.
