Transport

getting around. parking facilities

Just like in any other big city, it is not advisable to drive in Madrid. It is always more convenient to use public transport. Nevertheless, there are several public and private parking areas available in the city, where you pay for the time your car is parked. Parking in the streets is limited during certain hours in Madrid's innermost districts by the Controlled Parking Service (SER).

Types of parking lots

SER establishes two types of parking lots

  • Blue parking lots: visitors have priority over these spaces, and can stay for a maximum of two hours. Residents are subjected to the same restrictions to park in these lots and have to pay the same rates.

  • Green parking lots: residents who have paid the annual fee have priority over these spaces and are allowed to park here free of time restrictions. Visitors may park here for a maximum of one hour.

Times

  • Monday to Friday: from 9 am to 8 pm

  • Saturday: from 9 am to 3 pm

  • August: Monday to Saturday: from 9 am to 3 pm.

  • Peak hours: from 11am to 1pm and from 6pm to 8pm

  • Off-peak hours: from 9am to 11am and from 1pm to 6pm.

Parking meters. How to use them.

In all controlled parking zones you will find parking meters (parquímetros), where you purchase your ticket which you must place in a visible area on the dashboard of your car. You can either pay with coins or with a tarjeta monedero, a special payment card available at the Oficina Municipal de Estacionamiento Regulado (Municipal Office of Controlled Parking) and from the controllers themselves. You can charge this card with up to 15 Euros at any parking meter.

If you park your car in a blue area, you must purchase your ticket from a blue parking meter, and if you leave it in a green area then you buy it from a green parking meter.

If you should overstay your time by less than an hour, you can cancel the fine by paying 3 Euros into the parking meter. Read the instructions on the parking meter for how to proceed.
