Located opposite the Royal Palace, the Madrid opera is one of the city's most important cultural centers. From its inauguration in 1850 to its closure in 1925, it enjoyed years of great splendor. Since it reopened its doors in 1997, it has recovered its status as one of the most important opera houses in Europe, with a seating capacity of 1746.
The Real offers ambitious, modern productions featuring the crème-de-la-crème in international opera and ballet, with around 180 shows per season. The Madrid Symphony Orchestra is its resident orchestra. The Gayarre Auditorium was opened in 2007 as a venue for concerts, chamber operas and recitals.
