450 square metres displaying over one thousand historical objects... An unmissable museum for football fans

Atlético de Madrid has opened the doors of its official museum inside the Vicente Calderón Stadium to show football fans the club´s 103-year history. Trophies, shirts, photographs or collections of boots are some of the mementos on show in the five main areas of the red-and-white museum.

A whole year of conversations and meetings between people connected to the team and former players –many of whom have donated objects to the collection– has enabled Atlético de Madrid to finally inaugurate its museum (almost one century after the club’s foundation). The 450 square metres of exhibition space display over 1,000 objects that are illustrative of more than just the history of the Madrid-based football team, they also trace the evolution of football in Spain and all over the world.

Small objects like old tickets and season tickets, collections of trading cards, football pools, flags or miniature players share the rooms with table footballs in different shapes and from different periods, photographs of Eduardo Ancha, one of the promoters of the team, or the shirt that Adelardo was wearing when Atlético won the Intercontinental Cup in 1975.

Five areas of memories

Atlético de Madrid MuseumAll these objects are on show in the five main areas the museum has been divided into. The first, Espacio Fundacional (Foundation Space), is a long corridor covered, on both sides, with books, sculptures, a photo gallery of the team’s presidents and, possibly, the museum’s most valuable collection: a dozen balls and pairs of boots that range from 1903 until present times.

In the Sala de Proyecciones (Projection Room), equipped with fifty seats and a giant screen, visitors can recall the most exciting images of the team’s history thanks to a ten minute video. In the Zona Interactiva (Interactive Area) fans can play a game of Trivial about the team, listen to anthems, historical narrations or watch matches on one of the three tactile screens.

Another of the areas of the museum is the Sala de Exposiciones Temporales (Temporary Exhibition Hall), which has been inaugurated with a large selection of old football match posters. Finally, the most important room in the museum, the Sala de Trofeos (Trophy Room), that displays most of the cups the team has won over its history. Nine Leagues and nine Copas del Rey (King’s Cups), one Supercopa de España (Spain Supercup), one European Cup Winners’ Cup and one Intercontinental Cup are the most valuable trophies on display in this area.

Sport collector and museologist Pablo Ornaque has designed the museum and collected all these historical objects. Officially appointed cultural advisor of Atlético de Madrid, the expert is also responsible for the Museum of Barcelona FC and the Olympic Museum in Athens, among others. Now, Ornaque, who has donated over 600 pieces from his personal collection to this new red-and-white museum, has made a dream come true for some of the most loyal fans in the football universe.
